Paracas (sea level)We flew into Lima late on a Monday night. The next day we took a four-hour bus ride south down the desert coast to Pisco and neighboring Paracas.
On the way to the Islas Ballestas, one passes the "Candelabra" on a nearby island. Most likely the product of local people's long before the Spaniard's arrival, other theories abound. A pelican found amongst the many seagulls. The intense number of birds here have left behind huge deposits of guano. In the mid-ninteenth century, the guano was Peru's biggest export. In fact, Spain even started the "Guano War" of 1865-66 over possession of some nearby guano rich islands. The sea lions. More birds. Chasing guano. Oooh, the smell! A dock still used to "harvest" the guano. We were told the government allows people to go in every five years or so to take the highly rich fertilizer out. Flashbacks to Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."
Masami took some video of the sea lions. We stayed two nights in the resort Hotel Paracas but went everyday by taxi to the larger nearby city of Pisco. Here, Masami poses in front of one of the many local internet cafes, this one called "Internet Bill Gates." The Pisco Church. There were numerous Moto-Taxis in Pisco and we took a ride in one. Masami's Spanish was bit limited but she did know "Cafe con leche, por favor." Second dinner of the honeymoon in the Hotel Paracas restaurant. Who would have thought they too would have soccer!! (Brazil vs. Argentina) Masami shed tears of joy over seeing two soccer games in the first
two night of the honeymoon. Unfortunately, this was the last game
the two saw while in Peru. This site was last updated 07/10/05 |
